A remote access is any combination of hardware and software to enable the remote access tools.A remote access service connects a client to a host computer, SAP HANA smart data access (SDA) allows you to access remote data as if the data were stored in local tables in SAP HANA, without copying the data into SAP HANA.

In SAP HANA, you use linked database or create virtual tables, which point to remote tables in different data sources, and then write SQL queries in SAP HANA that use these virtual tables. The SAP HANA query processor optimizes these queries by executing the relevant part of the query in the target database, returning the results of the query to SAP HANA, and then completing the operation. Physical data movement is not supported by SAP HANA smart data access.
Because smart data access is part of the SAP HANA core system, no additional licensing is required to use it. Additional support packages and patches are available for download from the SAP Software Download Center, and are installed using the SAP HANA database lifecyle manager (HDBLCM).
The hardware platform of the SAP HANA local system and the remote source must have the same endianess. For example, if your Oracle database is running on Intel-based hardware, and your SAP HANA system is using an IBM Power system, you can’t create an Oracle remote source.

SAP HANA remote Data Access, data can be merged in heterogeneous EDW landscapes (data federation). SAP HANA remote Data Access make it possible to access remote data, without having to replicate the data to the SAP HANA database beforehand. The following are supported as sources: SAP HANA, SAP IQ, Intel Distribution for Apache Hadoop. A list of all supported sources is provided in the SAP HANA Administration Guide. SAP HANA handles the data like local tables on the database. Automatic data type conversion makes it possible to map data types from databases connected via SAP HANA Smart Data Access to SAP HANA data types.
